Pitt in Action: Mobilizing for mission. Connecting to community.

Pitt aspires to be a University that strengthens our communities. In fulfillment of that mission, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in service and volunteerism opportunities. By engaging in service to the community and utilizing the Pitt Volunteer Portal, you become part of the success story of the University of Pittsburgh!

Opportunities for Direct Service

Pitt Day of Caring (October)

One of the University’s largest service opportunities for faculty and staff, Day of Caring connects Pitt teams with community partners to complete a service project in support of the organization's goals.

Christmas Day at Pitt (December)

Since 2006, Pitt has partnered with the Salvation Army of Western Pennsylvania to serve Christmas Dinner to individuals and families in-need. Faculty, staff, and their families from Pitt and Sodexho are invited to give of their time on Christmas Day to make this event possible.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service (January)

An annual day of student, staff, and faculty service celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Pitt Be A Good Neighbor Day (March)

Be A Good Neighbor Day of seeks to create a sense of community on campus while working alongside neighborhoods that focus civic engagement and enhance the collaborative power of community service.

Produce to People (Monthly)

The second Thursday of each month, Pitt faculty and staff have the opportunity to volunteer at the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank's Produce to People program to prepare foodstuffs for those in need. Volunteers are transported via Pitt shuttles and returned to campus following service.

Adopt A Block (Monthly)

Pitt partners with the Oakland Planning and Development Corporation to coordinate regular adopt-a-block cleanups in Oakland communities. Individuals and teams are welcome.

Vitalant Blood Drives (Monthly)

As a public service, the University of Pittsburgh partners with Vitalant (formerly Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh) to host blood drives throughout the year. Each donation can save up to three lives, and with all donations going straight to local hospitals, there could be no better time to donate.

The University of Pittsburgh Office of Community and Governmental Relations (CGR) maintains relationships with all levels of government, including Federal, Commonwealth, County, and City, while also leading Pitt’s community-facing work through collaboration, communication, and facilitation of University engagement with its broader communities. CGR is responsive, bringing neighborhood voices, policy awareness, and issue based activity together by bridging internal and external stakeholders to forge new collaborations.
