DAY ONE PROJECT STATEMENT The Day One Project’s mission is to insure that all young single parent families have the support they need from DAY ONE to create the conditions that will allow all family members to achieve their potential and create a better life. This will be accomplished by providing stable housing, conditioned upon parent’s participation in all of the Day One Project services. The services will include educational programming around early childhood development, parenting, building wealth and financial literacy, healthy living, education and career counseling, and stress management. Further services may be provided based on the individual needs of the participants. We would be targeting parents with children two or younger so that we can reach the children during the critical years of their cognitive development. We will be reaching out to families before they are in crisis so that we can help create a positive vision for their future, before stress and poverty have destroyed their sense of hope and their confidence in controlling their destiny. We will be running a pilot program with 4-5 families to test our ideas, learn from our mistakes, and begin to prove the worth of our outcomes. I believe this program will yield an incredible return on investment relative to monies spent on other initiatives. I also know that the societal and financial costs of not addressing this crisis are staggering. Day One is passionate about changing the course of the lives of these children and families. All parents and children deserve an opportunity for a good life. Day One provides that opportunity. Our educational programming will begin Saturday April 1st from 10-1 at Obama Academy in East Liberty. Participants must attend 12 weeks of programming before becoming eligible for housing.
