On-Campus Note Takers

Serve your Pitt community by being a volunteer note-taker for another Pitt student with disabilities. As a resource to our students, we are looking for volunteer note-takers to assist in the following courses to ensure every student at Pitt has the tools they need to learn. The information for each course below is in need of a volunteer at this time.

Note-taker Responsibilities and Important Information

  • Notes should be submitted/emailed within 24 hours of the class meeting to drsnotes@pitt.edu or directly to the student email if designated
  • Notes may be hand written and scanned, however, notes typed and saved as a PDF or Word format (any word version is acceptable) are preferred. Even if no notes were taken, email a document stating why there were no notes.
  • If you drop a class or are no longer able to be a note taker, notify Disability Services and Resources Office immediately.
  • Put the date & course (i.e. PSY 0100) on the first page.
  • Number all pages in sequence: 1,2,3,…
  • Explain all abbreviations when you use them for the first time.
  • Note-takers are required to make arrangements for a substitute note-taker or get notes from another student as soon as possible in the case of an absence from class.

Note-taking Benefits NOTE-TAKERS!

  • Work toward your OCC 60 Hours of Service!
  • $100 gift card to the note-takers after the end of the semester if all notes were uploaded within the required timeframe.
  • Enhance your resume - your services can be indicated on resume.
    Example Resume Statement:
    Peer Note-Taker (Semester and Year)
University of Pittsburgh, Disability Resources and Services

Provided detailed notes, for students registered with the Disability Resources and Services. Forty five hours of accommodation note-taking service was completed.
  • It’s convenient to be a peer note taker. You never have to give up your notebook or visit the Disability Resources and Services to make copies or upload your notes; notes may be uploaded using any scanner and computer with internet access.
  • Feel good about helping a fellow student. You don’t have to be the best note taker in the world to volunteer. We’re looking for people who write legibly, get the main points, and want to help.
  • YOUR class grade may actually be better than expected!  Who knows?

Who needs a Note-taker?

Disability Resources and Services aims to provide academic access through a note-taking accommodation for students with documented disabilities.  Most students with a disability are able to attend class regularly, however, the specific challenges of their disability interferes with their ability to take notes. They may not be able to take their own notes because they may have to watch a sign language interpreter closely, or they may have low vision, or have very limited use of their hands, or they may have difficulty listening and writing at the same time.
Notes provided from a peer note taker help these students fill-in the gaps of information missing in their own notes, or, in some cases, the notes provided are the only source for reviewing class activities and discussions.
As a note taker, your skill provides a valuable service to the Pitt community.
