Rooted in Community: Juneteenth Volunteer Day with Project Love

As part of the University of Pittsburgh Juneteenth programming, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will host Rooted in Community in partnership with the Office of PittServes and the Office of Engagement and Community Affairs. This event aims to create sustained relationships with communities surrounding the University and educate our Pitt community on the rich history ingrained in those communities. University students, staff, and faculty will volunteer at numerous community gardens in and surrounding the greater Pittsburgh area.

Volunteers are being sought to celebrate the anniversary of hip hop through volunteer service where it is needed most. Volunteer project will involve: 1. Spreading mulch using wheel barrows, 2. Assist with building a 3 stage compost bin, 3. Clear and discard all weeds growing between raised beds, 4. Rake and discard grass clippings at both green spaces, 5. Build a melon patch, 6. Clear remaining area to complete eco-friendly groundhog barrier, 7. Pick up litter in a half block radius around the project site, 8. have fun responsibly.

Light refreshments will be available. Music celebrating the history of hip hop will be played starting at 11am. Volunteers can recommend a dee jay for the occasion. All volunteers must come prepared to have fun, complete the tasks, make an impact, represent your cause! Very clean bathroom facilities will be available at the nearby library. Hand sanitizer will be available at project site.
